Families and Youth

A ministry for raising faithful families in New York City, with something for everyone—infants and parents included.

Family Ministries is a place where kids discover faith in playful ways and parents find kindred hearts and minds. We are people of diverse backgrounds and families of various definitions, all with a desire to raise healthy children and sustain strong and faithful relationships.

Read about our exciting Sundays and upcoming special events, and enroll your children online. We welcome your family to find a home with Family Ministries!

Little Lambs

The Little Lambs ministry is dedicated to providing a nurturing, faith-based environment for our infants to toddlers. Through song and dance storytelling, they learn the most foundational truth of all: I am loved.

Under the leadership of Osanna Urbay, our Little Lambs gather every Sunday from 9 am until 12:30 pm while parents are in worship or attending the Parents Community Group. Our program is staffed with experienced, professional caregivers, some of whom have been with FAPC for more than 20 years and watched many of our little ones grow up to become young adults.

We have a large room for infants, complete with cribs and a changing table, and two rooms for toddlers.

To ensure their safety, we require that all children be registered for the nursery. You may register online, or on Sunday morning in the LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center.

Sunday School

The Sunday School ministry offers an engaging, hands-on approach to learning Scripture. Our rotation-based curriculum is tailored to meet the multiple intelligences of our diverse group of students, while teaching them the fundamental, age-appropriate building blocks of faith:

  • Pre-Kindergarten: God loves me.
  • Kindergarten & First Grade: I am a child of God.
  • Second & Third Grade: God is love.
  • Fourth & Fifth Grade: For God so loved the world.

For one hour every Sunday (beginning at 9:30 am), children and their teachers engage in dynamic Bible lessons, activities and music. All classes are taught by trained, experienced lay volunteers.

Children's Church

Children’s Church is a separate and unique worshipping experience for our children (pre-K through third grade) that takes place during the 11 am service. The children begin their time of worship with their families in the Sanctuary, then they are led downstairs during the Litany of Parting.

The Children’s Church curriculum involves a storytelling method that encourages wonder while modeling a rhythm of worship similar to the service that’s going on upstairs. Through this experience, our young ones learn another foundational truth: We love God through worship.

What is the difference between Sunday School and Children's Church? While both experiences are about learning Scripture, Children's Church differs in it focuses on teaching our young ones the meaning of worship in our lives. That means learning not only about God and Jesus, but also about the Church and Christian tradition. Children experience various elements of worship, such as prayer and giving thanks, in ways that help them understand the “whys” and not just the “hows.” Our hope is that our children love going to church as much as we do, or maybe even more!

Youth@FAPC

Through weekly Bible Study, fellowship and special events, Youth@FAPC engages the hard questions of life and faith, and involves our youth in serving the community and being part of the life of the church.

Our Sunday morning Youth Group curriculum often follows the theme of the current sermon series and focuses on the teachings of Jesus as Prophet, Savior and King. These weekly sessions (which convene at 9:30 am in the LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center) are led by our seminarians.

Beyond Sunday mornings, Youth@FAPC also offers:

  • Youth Lunch & Fellowship, an afternoon outing once a month to take a break from studies, grab a bite and explore the city.
  • Summer Mission Project, a week-long project in partnership with a local organization that gives youth hands-on experience in putting their faith into action.
  • Annual Service Events, including the Souper Bowl of Caring and the 30 Hour Famine, two events that raise awareness and direct resources toward alleviating global hunger.

Children's Choir & Youth Music

Children's Choir & Youth Music provides opportunities for young people to express their love of God through voice and instruments. Choristers learn to read music, develop good singing habits and appreciate the many styles of sacred repertoire. Our children and youth are featured frequently in Sunday worship, but our biggest performances of the year are the Christmas Pageant, the Family Ministries Christmas Eve service and our Spring Concert. We welcome all children and youth to celebrate God’s gift of music every Sunday at 10:15 am (right after Sunday School), with regular rehearsals from September through May. Our children's and youth music ministry is under the direction of Dr. Eugenia Oi Yan Yau.

Volunteer as a Sunday School Teacher

One of the most enriching ways to strengthen the Church and learn more about God is to serve as a Sunday School teacher or teacher's assistant. Experience is not required; all you need is a love of children and a desire to help them grow in faith. You may volunteer for a few weeks or an entire year; any time commitment is appreciated. Contact familyministries@fapc.org for information and to sign up.

Our family programs don't leave parents out of the mix. Contact familyministries@fapc.org for information about any of our programs for parents.

Parents Community Group

We are a group of parents committed to exploring how to raise our faithful, Christian families in New York City. While our children are in Sunday School, we come together to share the joys and challenges of raising a family in faith. You will find us Sunday mornings at 9:30, sitting in a circle in the gathering hall of the LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center. Grab a chair and enjoy the lively discussion! Read more and sign up for this community group here.

Mom's Bible Study

Are you an expectant mother? Or the mother of newborns, toddlers or elementary-school children? This small group Bible study was created just for you. Mom's Bible Study meets on Monday mornings in a member's home. This monthly fellowship is your time to share concerns, worries and laughter, and to discuss the meaning of Scripture as it applies to your life and the life of your family. Children are always welcome to come along. Mom's Bible Study is now an FAPC community group! We also offer a community group for moms of little ones. Read more about our community groups and sign up here.

Baptism is a sacred event in the life of a family and a child. When an infant or child is baptized, the congregation commits itself to nurture the child in faith, and in turn the parents or guardians of the child declare their promise to be an active part of the church community.

The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is conducted once a month (usually the second or third Sunday) during worship. (Adult baptisms are typically part of the service welcoming new members, which takes place about four times a year. To learn about becoming a member of FAPC, click here.)

The only prerequisite for infant baptism is that one parent be an active member of the congregation. A baptism application must be submitted five to six weeks prior to the Sunday your child will be baptized, and the parent(s) must attend a Baptism Commitment Class. We invite you to review the infant baptism brochure (available here) for more details.

Baptisms may be scheduled for either the 9:30 am or 11 am worship service (10 am during the summer). Infant and children's baptisms must be scheduled through Family Ministries (212.247.0490, familyministries@fapc.org).

“Maker Fun Factory: Created by God and Built for a Purpose” is the theme for this year’s Vacation Bible School, otherwise known as the BEST. WEEK. EVER. Gear up for a creative adventure where your curious kids become hands-on inventors who discover they’re lovingly crafted by God. VBS offers five active mornings of Bible lessons, crafts, games and other activities.

Children from age 3 (and potty-trained) to entering fifth-graders are invited to a weeklong adventure to explore Scripture while having fun! We also offer a separate track for older students (incoming sixth- and seventh-graders).

We'll meet Monday through Friday, Aug. 14–18, from 9:30 am until 12 pm, in the LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center. FAPC membership is not required, so invite friends and neighbors to come along for summer's BEST. WEEK. EVER.

We invite our older youth (eighth grade through high school) to volunteer at VBS! No need to register. Contact familyministries@fapc.org to let us know you're interested in helping out.
