Children & Youth

The Children's & Youth Choirs How do you raise children in the city and grow together as a family of faith? These are questions Family Ministries seeks to answer as we sort through the complexities of city life and travel the journey of faith together.

Family Ministries is a place where kids can be kids and parents can find kindred hearts and minds. We are people from diverse backgrounds and families of various definitions who find commonality in our desire to raise healthy children and sustain strong faith and relationships.

We offer programs, classes and events designed to develop faith, increase knowledge, divide burdens, share joys and have fun as we grow in Christ. We gather for festivals, Christmas parties, parent’s nights, sing-a-longs, family camps, mission trips, choir performances and weekly on Sunday mornings. We hope your family finds a home in Family Ministries.

What are your options on Sunday Morning?

During the 9:30 am worship service in the Chapel…

Families may worship together
Nursery care is available for children under the age of 3
Children, ages 3 – 5th grade, gather in the Christian Education Center for Sunday School
Youth, grades 6th – 12th, gather for Youth Group in the Christian Education Center
Parents can attend worship, the Positive Parents Group, or an Adult Education class without kids

Immediately following the 9:30 am worship service (around 10:15 am), Adult Education and Sunday School conclude. At this point...

Parents pick up their children and youth
Families can fellowship in the Gathering Hall (light refreshments provided)
Children are invited to gather in the Music Room for Children’s Choir

During the 11:00 am worship service in the Sanctuary...

Families may worship together
Nursery care is available for children under the age of 3
During the worship service, children 3 years – 2nd grade are invited at the Litany of Parting to come forward and depart for Children’s Church
Children and youth, 3rd grade and over, remain in the worship service. Programming for 3rd-12th graders is offered during the 9:30 am service.

Youth

The Youth Group at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church recognizes that middle school and high school students have unique questions about faith, about life, and about God. Instead of shying away from tough issues, we provide a safe place for youth to find be real about their journey and find real answers to their questions.

Through education, service and fellowship, the Youth Group engages the community, the city and the church, all the while growing closer to the Lord.

Children's Church

What is the role of children in worship? Are they simply to be seen and not heard? Are they not even to be seen? Are they to be treated as adults and expected to remain quiet and engaged throughout an entire service?

While we offer programming for infants to youth during the 9:30 am worship service every Sunday, during the 11 am service, we only offer Children's Church for kids pre-K to 2nd grade. Children and parents start together in the Sanctuary until the little ones are dismissed at the Litany of Parting to go to their own service downstairs in the Christian Education Center.

What is the difference between Sunday School and Children's Church?

While education happens during both hours, Children's Church differs in that it focuses on teaching our young ones what the meaning and function of worship is in their lives. That means education about God and Jesus, and also the Church and tradition. The students get first-hand experience of the various elements of a worship service in ways that help them understand the “why’s” and not just the “how’s”. Our sincere hope is that our children love going to church as much as we do (or maybe even more!).

Nursery

Christian Infant Care Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church is committed to helping you teach your children to know and love God. That commitment begins with Kindership. Kindership is dedicated to nurturing 0- 3 year old children and their parents through fellowship and Christian education. Sunday School

Employing music, arts, crafts, drama and other enjoyable learning activities, this very special hour affords growth and fellowship for elementary school age children from age three through fifth grade.
