Adult Education

Adult EducationThrough the Adult Education ministry, we seek to be involved in God's deeper work of transforming our minds, our hearts, our community and our world. We believe that by knowing and understanding God and our neighbor better, we can love and serve God and our neighbor better.

Each semester, Adult Education offers a number of classes, studies, dialogue sessions, film screenings and more. These classes address traditional, as well as contemporary, disciplines such as

  • theology
  • Biblical study
  • spirituality
  • church history
  • political events
  • sexuality
  • finances
  • ethics
  • world religions

Many of our instructors are homegrown, but we also host visiting scholars and lecturers. Recent guests have included Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Marilynne Robinson, theologian Walter Brueggemann, Chinese Christian artist He Qi, the late basketball star and Sudanese activist Manute Bol, anti-poverty advocate Abigail Disney and humorist A.J. Jacobs.

All events are free of charge and open to the public. Advance registration is not required for most classes. Take a look at our course list and engage in Adult Education where learning together means growing together.

Spring 2013 Courses

Introducing CREDO: The Essentials of Christian Theology

This spring Adult Education introduces CREDO, a series of classes that dives into the essentials of Christian theology. The classes are intended to review traditional doctrine, connect it to the contemporary Church, and inspire participants to clarify their own understanding of what it means to be a Christian.

CREDO will be part of the core curriculum of Adult Education at FAPC, with future classes taking up other “stumbling blocks” of our Christian heritage. CREDO classes will rely in part on Alister McGrath’s Theology: The Basics (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011). Copies are available in The Shop at FAPC.

The Mission Trip That Has No End

Suzan Habachy and Jacquelyn Sapiie

Sunday, May 5 • 12:30 pm, LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center

In 2010, 11 women from Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church traveled to Egypt. They visited Pharaonic, Christian and Muslim Egypt, they visited affluent areas and impoverished areas, and they observed how FAPC's benevolence funds have been at work in local communities. Come hear their stories of Egypt and find out how, and why, this mission trip goes on.

A Historical & Architectural Tour of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church

Derek Maddalena and Gail Crane

Sunday, May 12 • 12:30 pm, Kirkland Chapel

First offered in 2011, this insider's tour of the history, architecture and infrastructure of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church has become a mainstay of the Adult Education program. Gail Crane, a member of the church for nearly 50 years, and Derek Maddalena, director of facilities, are your guides through our sacred spaces and a few private places. Participants have the option of climbing inside our historic clock tower, where the original clockworks (powered only by gravity and a large box of stones) are still in use, 138 years since they were installed. Visitors to the clock tower are urged to wear flat, rubber-soled shoes.

Employment Advisory

Founded in 1950, the steering committee develops and presents free programs (twice a month) to assist in job search, resume preparation, career planning and networking. It is the oldest church-sponsored employment assistance group in the city. Contact Constance Klages at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
