Introducing Our New Advent Reader

As a special gift to our members and friends, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church introduces "Standing Watch: An Advent Reader," a collection of pastoral reflections for each day of the season.

This new holiday e-book is available for download as a PDF file. You may also elect to have these daily reflections arrive in your email, starting Sunday, Dec. 3 (the first Sunday of Advent) and continuing through Christmas Day.

“This Advent Reader is the culmination of a long-time dream,” says Executive Pastor Charlene Han Powell. “For years we imagined mining the treasury of superb preaching at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church to create a collection of Advent reflections, drawn from our rich history and unique ministry here in midtown Manhattan. We hope the Advent Reader will be a faithful companion as we enter this season of sacred anticipation of the Lord’s coming.”

FAPC member Kathy Henderson edited the collection, working with FAPC pastors past and present, and researching the FAPC Archives. The earliest entry dates from 1914, a passage from a sermon by the Rev. Dr. John Henry Jowett. The Reader also includes reflections by former FAPC pastors the Rev. John Kelman, the Rev. Dr. John Sutherland Bonnell, the Rev. Dr. Bryant Kirkland, the Rev. Janice Smith Ammon, the Rev. Dr. Nora Tubbs Tisdale and many others. More recent selections from our current pastors also are part of the collection.

“As you read each day, I invite you to first note the date of each passage, and ponder the context of each sermon as it was delivered,” Charlene writes in her preface to the Reader. “You will hear a changing cadence of homiletic language from 1914 to 2014, but the good news -- God is with us! -- remains constant.”

A limited number of printed copies of the Advent Reader will be available at the FAPC reception desk for those without a computer or print capability. Copies also will be mailed to our homebound members.
