New Community Groups for Parents

Family Ministries has added two community groups in recent weeks, bringing to five the number of groups offering Bible study, support and fellowship for the parents of FAPC.

Putting the Pieces Together is a twice-monthly group created for parents of children on the autism spectrum and children with development delays. Kelly Sterrett, the founder, is a friend of FAPC parent Gina Robertson, who encouraged her to start the group and locate it here.

"My husband and I have two children, and the younger one has autism, at the severe end of the spectrum," Kelly says. "He just turned five. When your child turns five, you no longer have control of his education, you face a lot of difficulties, and if you are not in a good financial situation your child is at the mercy of the government. It's the most stressful thing I've ever done in my life."

Kelly says she searched without success for a support group.

"I need to be surrounded by people in my situation, people who can understand and be a support system," she says. "Gina said, 'I'll find you a space, you gotta do this.' So I did."

The group meets every other week, rotating between evening and daytime hours to provide flexibility for parents and their varying schedules. About five to eight parents currently attend, and there is room to grow. Upcoming meetings are set for 7 pm Thursday, May 25; 10 am Thursday, June 8; and 7 pm Thursday, June 22. The group meets in the LaDane Williamson Christian Education Center.

A second moms' group, Mom's Evening Bible Study is set to begin on Tuesday, May 30, at 7 pm. Jennica Carmona-Arandia has created the group for moms who are unable to attend the monthly Mom's Bible Study (led by Gina Robertson) that meets on Monday mornings.

"Since mornings are not an ideal time for many working moms, I was eager to start a Bible study that meets in the evening," Jennica says. The inaugural meeting is scheduled to meet in the Vestry on the ground floor of the Curry Church House. For details, email Jennica at
