The Homeward
Bound Committee supports Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church shelter guests
with information on health care, housing, nutrition and other topics they
will need to return to normal lifestyles.
Volunteers share fellowship with guests in the shelter and arrange for
outside speakers to address real-life issues. Homeward Bound began as
a trial program in Spring 1995 as a way to provide more than simply shelter
support to the Church's overnight guests. It became an ongoing spring
and fall activity, and members now meet weekly for six consecutive weeks
in each season from 7:15 pm to 8:45 pm. Those interested in joining should
have a concern and compassion for the homeless.
"I always feel, when the program has concluded, that I have gained
more than I provided in the form of a better understanding and appreciation
of shelter guests as children of God, just like us," said Bill Poulton.
We are seeking volunteers to lead discussions on topics of concern
to the homeless men in our shelter as they make the transition into an
independent lifestyle.
Examples of past topics are nutrition, budgeting, legal issues and housing.
We welcome suggestions for additional topics. We are also seeking volunteers
to serve as mentors to our guests during the six week program.
