Meals
on Heels is a weekend meal preparation and delivery program serving the
homebound elderly in the east midtown area. The program, which was created
more than a decade ago to supplement the Meals on Wheels outreach that
provided nourishment on weekdays, is a joint project of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian
Church and United Neighbors of East Midtown. UNEM is an agency that serves
the homebound elderly in the area of New York City from 59th Street to
14th Street, Fifth Avenue to the East River. The work UNEM does enables
needy elderly persons to remain in their own homes, and through Meals
on Heels, some 40 senior citizens receive a hot, nutritious meal, as well
as non-perishable food items every Saturday of the year.
A steering
committee of 13 volunteers oversees the activities of the program, and
a rotating corps of volunteer chefs and weekly coordinators assists with
the meal planning, purchasing, preparation, and delivery. In addition
to the weekly deliveries, Meals on Heels volunteers are involved with
special projects throughout the year. The annual fall benefit raises necessary
funds for the operation of the program, while the Thanksgiving Day and
Christmas Day meals allow volunteers to reach out during the holiday season.
Caring folks with some time and love to give are needed.
