For more than 40 years, on the fourth Sunday of the month, volunteers from Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church have led evening worship and served dinner to residents of the Bowery Mission in lower Manhattan. Founded in 1879, the Bowery is the third-oldest gospel mission in the United States. It is a place where homeless men can begin life again, empowered by Jesus’ message of salvation and God’s enduring love. This simple act of joining with another faith community for a Sunday service allows us to be the hands and feet of Christ to those struggling daily without food, shelter or hope.
Volunteers take part by:
- singing
- playing an instrument
- reading a Scripture lesson
- offering a prayer during the service
- preaching
- offering individual prayer at the altar call
- serving the evening meal
- offering fellowship
- or simply ministering with your presence in worship
The maximum time commitment is from 5:45 until 8 pm. Join us for an uplifting evening as we share the love and grace of God. Click here for directions to the Bowery Mission.
"For the past several years, coming together with the other faithful FAPC members to lead the men and women of the Bowery Mission in worship has helped me to mature in my own faith and understanding of God’s work in our world. As we share God’s word together, and the men share their testimonies, I am humbled and awed at how and where God chooses to reveal himself and his will for our lives. If you choose to participate in this meaningful outreach, you must be prepared to receive much more than you give!" - Alina Lee
