New Orleans Mission Trip

The second Bicentennial Mission Trip group, consisting of Debbie Mullins, Lane Maurer, Emi Iwaida, Maggie McGuigan, Frank Strzelecki, Kris Johnson and Sarah Johnson, left for New Orleans on May 1 to work on rebuilding homes of those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. They will return on May 6. Let us remember them in our prayers as they help to bring healing and hope to hurricane victims.

New Member Has a Link to Our Past

Holly Sullivan, who became a member of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian on March 9, has an interesting connection to the church's past. Her grandmother, pictured with her above, was a staff member in the 1940s. It is another reminder that our proud heritage continues to move forward towards a bright future (photo by Peter Wing).

May 11, 2008: Operation Campfire

This Sunday, May 11 marks the last day of the Deacons’ annual Operation Campfire fund-raising drive. As you may know, this drive helps raise money to send underprivileged children from the
New York area to Holmes Presbyterian Camp in Holmes, NY. The current cost of sending a child to Holmes for one week of camp is $525, and our goal is to raise enough money to send 40 children to camp this summer—that’s $21,000.

The Deacons would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to all of our members who have participated in the drive so far. At the moment we are still approximately $11,000 away from our goal, so we encourage everyone who has not yet participated to prayerfully consider making a donation at whatever level is comfortable for you. If you are not able to attend church this Sunday, May 11, but would still like to donate, please feel free to mail a check (made out to FAPC, marked “Operation Campfire”) to the church at 7 West 55th Street, New York, NY, 10019.

Thank you and blessings to all.

Homeless Litigation Nets Church Surprise $55,000+ Donation
By Greg Dow

In December, FAPC received an unexpected donation of $55,357.34 from Sidley Austin LLP, one of the law firms that helped us win the
case to prevent the City from disrupting FAPC’s ministry to the homeless who seek our aid and shelter. Sidley Austin had received
a reimbursement from the City for time that they spent on this important First Amendment case. Sidley Austin, in recognition of the important work of this church, has donated to FAPC one half of the amount they were reimbursed, and donated the other half to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty in Washington, DC. We are extremely grateful to the firm, both for the legal assistance that they provided to us and for this act of financial generosity.

Moore Moving On

After 20 years of dedicated service, Gretta Moore, who has worked as an accounting assistant in the finance office and as the manager for membership and records, is leaving the staff and moving to Nevada. In her time here, Moore took on a wide variety of roles for the church, including scheduling of baptisms and weddings. “We will miss her
greatly,” said the Rev. Randy Weber. “We thank her for the wonderful ministry that she has performed here in our church, and wish Gretta the best in her move to her new home out West.”

Horn Concludes Term As Clerk

Dawson Horn, who has served FAPC with dedication and commitment during this time of transition, concluded his term as clerk of the session this past February. We are grateful to Dawson for the work he has done for the church. At the February 11 session meeting, Debbie Mullins was elected as clerk, and assumed the role at the March 3rd agenda committee.

A New Editor for the Voice

We would like to welcome Erin Schulte as the new editor of the Voice, as of this issue. As part of the implementation of “servant leadership” defined in the new vision statement, editorial decisions and most of the stories written will come from church members and not staff. If you would like to welcome Erin and offer help on future issues, please send a note to her attention (fapc@fapc.org).

Cleopatra Rolle Honored
By Peter Wing

Cleopatra Rolle, M. DIV., was honored at the celebration of her 76th
birthday for her lifetime of caregiving service. Her service to the church
has included being the first volunteer chairperson of the FAPC shelter in 1987. In 1988, she received the St. Joseph Humanitarian Award from the Partnership for Homeless. Cleopatra (above, with Randy and Cindy Weber) is currently in a doctoral program at New York Theological Seminary. More recent FAPC service includes past volunteer pastoral care for our congregation, service on the board of deacons and active involvement with Family Ministries working with Jacob Bolton and Dr. Eugenia Yau.
