The
Rev. Roland Powell Perdue, III, joined Fifth Avenue Presbyterian
Church as Interim Senior Pastor on August 14, 2006. Rev. Perdue brings
50 years
of experience in ministerial leadership to
FAPC. He was born in Long Beach, CA, and
is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, and
Columbia
Theological
Seminary in Decatur, GA. He was ordained to the ministry of word and
sacrament in the Presbyterian Church in 1959. In his early career he
worked in
campus
ministry, both as a pastor and for the denomination. He then served congregations
in Decatur, GA; Austin, TX; Jacksonville, FL; Birmingham, MI; and El
Paso, TX. He retired in 1998 and since that time he has served a series
of interim pastorates in large, multi-staff churches including First
Presbyterian Nashville, the Presbyterian Church of Westfield, NJ, and
most recently Westminster Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City. He met
his wife, Jane, when they were both students at Chapel Hill. They have
five grown children. Jane is a teacher and published poet, and she has
always been active in the churches Roland serves.
A dynamic,
yet humble preacher, Rev. Perdue sees the sermon as a dialogue among
the people, the pastor and God. He says, "I seek to be emotionally
open and intellectually honest, and to vary the content and method
of the sermon. I make a concerted effort to point to the relationship
between the Biblical record and current events in the world."
