The Choir of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church is comprised of a dedicated core of volunteer singers and complemented by a number of professional section leaders totaling about 30 choristers. Though the group’s main objective is to provide musical leadership for Sunday morning worship and special services throughout the year, it is also a thriving and growing fellowship group. Through their service in choir, members are encouraged not only to grow their faith but their musicianship as well; regular seminars, workshops, and sectional rehearsals serve not only musical aims, but also to deepen our connections with one another. During the past several years, the choir has benefited through collaboration with visiting conductors and musicians, and in the regular preparation of larger works.
Recent anthems include:
- Beethoven’s Hallelujah, from Christus am Ölberge
- The Geistliches Lied of Johannes Brahms
- César Franck’s Psalm 150
- Calvin Hampton’s We Plow the Fields
- The Heavens are Telling, from The Creation by Joseph Haydn
- Franz Liszt’s Psalm 18
- Austin Lovelace’s Let this Mind be in You
- The Lord is my Shepherd, from John Rutter’s Requiem
- Leo Sowerby’s Benedictus Es, Domine and Jubilate Deo in C
- Sebastian Wesley’s Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace
There is a place within FAPC’s music program for anyone who wishes to learn, grow and serve God through music. During the program year (from Homecoming Sunday to Memorial Day), the Choir provides music for the 11:00 am worship service, and at the 10:00 am service during the summer. Sunday morning rehearsals start at 8:45 am in Jones Auditorium (3rd floor). Volunteers who can read music, have a good sense of pitch and a blending voice, and can commit to regular attendance are encouraged to contact Mitchell Crawford
