The Kitchen Campaign

Fifth Avenue’s mission is to be the Light, Leaven & Salt of New York City and beyond. More often than not, this work begins at a table.

Every Sunday, throughout the church house, hot coffee, cookies, and sometimes even lunch are prepared to welcome members, visitors, and gaggles of eager children to tables of fellowship.

Thanks to dedicated volunteers, the Fifth Avenue kitchen is in full operation throughout the rest of the week. Every Monday and Wednesday, scores of hot lunches are made for the homeless who visit our street ministry, A Place at the Table. On Saturdays, nourishing food for shut-ins is prepared and delivered by our Meals on Heels team, who are now in their 35th year of compassionate and connected ministry.

The Fifth Avenue kitchen is a critical part of how this church lives out Christ’s challenge to extend hospitality and care to those who hunger. And we are making plans to do even more to address rising levels of hunger in New York City.

What This Campaign Will Do

The Fifth Ave Kitchen Renovation Campaign will fund a top-to-bottom renovation of a section of our facility in desperate need of repairs and updates. We will make critical electrical and plumbing repairs both above the ceiling and below the floors of the kitchen. We will install a new fire suppression system. We will install “safety flooring” throughout the kitchen. We will replace numerous ailing or non-functioning appliances in the kitchen with new commercial grade appliances necessary to the ongoing work of our various food ministries.

Why Now

Currently, our kitchen appliances date back almost thirty years. The age, disrepair and limitations of our current equipment hamper the preparation of meals on a large-scale basis.

Campaign Goals

A subset of our Property Committee (working with members of Meals on Heels and Roxo Events) has reviewed the current kitchen and have developed plans for a renovation. The Trustees have reviewed bids for the work and have selected the lowest bid from a contractor with an excellent track-record in completing this sort of project on time with superb results.

The estimated cost for the Fifth Ave Kitchen Renovation Campaign is $520,000.
