Who’s Minding the Church?

Despite one retirement and two sabbaticals, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church is still well-stocked with pastors for the coming summer.

Senior Pastor Scott Black Johnston departs this week for his annual study leave and will return in late August. With the Rev. Randy Weber leading a Scottish pilgrimage (and retiring at the end of the month), and the Rev. Kate Dunn away on summer sabbatical, the Rev. Dr. Charlene Han Powell is in charge of administration and pastoral care.

Charlene is fully staffed with assistance from our parish visitor, the Rev. Helen Jackson; parish associate, the Rev. J.C. Austin; visiting pastor, the Rev. Pattie Kitchen; and seminarian Morgan King.

Pattie served the Presbyterian Church (USA) for more than 20 years, both in local congregations and in international ministry. Now retired, Pattie lives with her husband, Jim, on the family farm in the Poconos in eastern Pennsylvania.

Starting today, she will be serving on site at FAPC Friday through Sunday throughout the summer.

Morgan is a third-year master of divinity candidate at Princeton Theological Seminary. A native of Cleveland, Tennessee, Morgan led the Youth Group as well as the young adult Wednesday night community group in 2016-17.

Beginning this fall, Morgan will be the seminarian working with NEXT Ministries. He is working full time at FAPC this summer.
