Blessings of Liberty: Dreaming Constitutional Freedom
The US Constitution sets forth terms to “secure the Blessings of Liberty” while the democratic experiment lays bare the fragility of freedom. The politics of race in the US cannot help but demonstrate that freedom is provisional. What does it mean for the church to enter the fray and what is the Christian called to risk? “When the Son of Man comes . . . to sit on the throne of his glory,” (Matthew 25:31), what happens to the church’s vision of kings and kingdoms, power and freedom? How are Christians called to advance rather than thwart the “Blessings of Liberty?” Dr. Andrea C. White is the Associate Professor of Theology and Culture at Union Theological Seminary where her research focuses on womanist theology, black critical theory, and phenomenology.
