Letter from a Birmingham Jail and Prison Reform Today

What does Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” say to us today? How could its principles reshape our criminal justice system?

Join us for a panel discussion of one of King’s most influential works and a look at how we, as Christians, can continue to fight for justice. Our panelists are the Rev. Charles Atkins, a chaplain at the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility and former chair of the Justice Ministries Committee of the Presbytery of New York City; Clinton Washington, client advocate at Bronx Freedom Fund, a nonprofit organization that works to dismantle the cash bail system and promote decarceration; and Clifford Skeene, who will share his personal journey of incarceration and reentry.

Read King’s 1963 letter here, and join us for an important conversation about an issue still relevant to us nearly 60 years later.
