James K.A. Smith: On the Road with Saint Augustine

Philosopher and award-winning author James K.A. Smith is our guest for an early-morning Adult Education event.

Smith will discuss his latest book, On the Road with Saint Augustine: A Real World Spirituality for Restless Hearts (2019). Called “the patron saint of restless hearts,” Augustine of Hippo spent a lifetime searching for his heart’s true home. The life of this fourth-century saint offers ancient wisdom for 21st-century seekers.

Smith is a professor of philosophy at Calvin University (formerly Calvin College) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Trained as a philosopher with a focus on contemporary French thought, Smith has expanded on that scholarly platform to become an engaged public intellectual and cultural critic. He is the author or co-author of 24 books, including You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit (2016), which inspired Senior Pastor Scott Black Johnston’s fall 2019 sermon series, Curate Your Heart.

Following his lecture, Dr. Smith will be our guest preacher during morning worship at 11 am in the Sanctuary.
