2025 Summer Sermon Series - Water in the Desert
“I will open up rivers for them on the high plateaus. I will give them fountains of water in the valleys. I will fill the desert with pools of water. Rivers fed by springs will flow across the parched ground.” - Isaiah 41:18

Water is the most abundant element in the world. It covers over seventy percent of the earth’s surface. It heals, quenches thirst, and provides comfort for the sweltering. We are drawn to water. In the United States of America, roughly forty percent of our population live in coastal counties, despite the coast accounting for less than ten percent of the nation’s land mass (excluding Alaska).
Yet there are more stories of people struggling in the desert than resting at the well. In a desert land without water, the air shimmers and mirages threaten to lead us astray. It is easy to become lost. It is easy to lose hope.
As we walk across this summer together, a time of rising geopolitical temperatures and uncertainty around every corner, we turn to Scripture that serves as Water in the Desert for us. This is the living water of God’s word. This is the truth that quenches and the sustenance that redeems.
Our summer sermon series Water in the Desert is anchored by the promises in the prophet Isaiah, who writes of the Lord:
“I will open up rivers for them on the high plateaus. I will give them fountains of water in the valleys. I will fill the desert with pools of water. Rivers fed by springs will flow across the parched ground.” (Isaiah 41:18).
As we seek this holy Water in the Desert, we will travel with the Hebrew people in their Exodus, follow Moses across borders, across deserts of uncertainty and distrust, of fear and human folly.
We will listen as Jesus tells us parables, we will come alongside those who find healing in pools of water or at wells, we will ponder water turned to wine. We will explore sacred Scripture that points us toward the source of our Creation in times of fear, division, and disruption.
Join us. Listen for the wisdom of the ancestors of our faith who found new life in its wellsprings, in prayer and petition, in connection across difference, and healing in community.
