Exciting News

Celebrate with us on Sunday, May 3! We will worship together at 11 am. There will be no Chapel Church service.

Light shines through the windows of the Kirkland Chapel amidst ongoing renovation.

Dear friends,

Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church’s beloved Kirkland Chapel is a centerpiece of Manhattan’s spiritual life and an integral part of our congregation’s worship. For the past two years, this chapel, which first opened in 1925, has been undergoing an extensive and much-needed renovation.

Construction projects such as this always have their fair share of challenges (asbestos in the walls, the need for new steel beams under the organ chamber). Our fantastic chapel renovation team has consistently met every one of these surprises with skill, aplomb, and good cheer. I am so grateful for their diligence, dedication, and hard work.

And now, with the renovation team’s blessing and with full joy, I am pleased to announce that we have set a date for the chapel’s re-opening.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 3, 2026. On this happy day, after our 11:00 am worship service, we will throw open the doors and celebrate the debut of the renovated Kirkland Chapel.

You will be able to walk through this old space made new. You will see the restored windows and their welcoming angels. You will be able to touch the sacred stones brought back to life after their long rest. Your eyes will take in the beautiful new lighting. The chapel holds a few wonderful surprises as well.

This renovation is a gift. It is a gift from our donors, members, supporters, and friends. It is a gift from our Task Force, architects, construction managers, laborers and artisans. It is a gift from this congregation to all those who will worship, gather, and seek solace here, now and long after we are gone.

We stand in humble appreciation for everyone who has supported and worked on this project. On Sunday, May 3, join us in our thanks and delight as we reopen our beloved Kirkland Chapel and launch its next century of life.

With blessings,

Scott Black Johnston
Senior Pastor
