Fall Bereavement Group Begins Oct. 2

Update: The start date for this group has changed from Sept. 25 to Oct. 2.

Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church will once again sponsor a 10-week bereavement support group, led by Ellen Theg, for persons struggling with grief and the aftermath of loss.

The group will meet Wednesday evenings from Oct. 2 through Dec. 18, from 7 to 8:30 pm. The group will not meet on Oct. 30 or Dec. 11.

Theg, a licensed psychotherapist and experienced bereavement counselor, has been counseling individuals on moving through grief and loss since 2001. Working with the Bereavement Center of Westchester, she has held groups for people mourning the loss of a partner, of siblings and of parents, providing support for the transition to life without the physical presence of the loved one. She has also facilitated child and adolescent groups in the Center’s Tree House program for families who grieve together.

“The benefit of a bereavement group is the support and connection it provides with others during the grieving process,” Theg explains. “This group will allow you an opportunity to tell your story and work on feelings—particularly the difficult ones, such as guilt, regret and anger. Learning to live with the ‘absent presence’ of your loved one is a process, and we hope that this group will support your movement along this path to acceptance of your new circumstances.”

The cost is $120 for the full program, and enrollment is limited to 10 persons. To register, contact Lance Hurst ([email protected]). Financial assistance is available if needed.
