Remembering a Fifth Avenue Legend

Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church gathered on Sunday, September 21, for the formal dedication of the Rita Arlen Room. The commemoration featured red roses, a beautiful cake, and the unveiling of Rita’s portrait.

Rita Arlen (1933 - 2023), a beloved member of our community, served as longtime president of the Women’s Association and as the stalwart organizer of the annual Women’s Bazar. With grace and generosity, she guided generations of women at Fifth Avenue in their call to serve God and neighbor.

“Rita’s presence was so consistent and her ministry so dedicated that, in our hallways, Rita was affectionately known as ‘an unpaid member of the staff,’” said Senior Pastor the Rev. Dr. Scott Black Johnston. “She was a force of nature—a force for good.”

Rita’s enduring legacy of hospitality and strength continues to enrich the life of Fifth Avenue, particularly through the ongoing witness and fellowship of the Women’s Ministry.

An inner light and an indomitable spirit

Sunday’s celebration followed a 2024 vote by the Board of Trustees to rename the Corning Logan Room on the fifth floor of the Curry Church House in Rita’s honor. The newly renovated space mirrors the warmth and elegance of its namesake and now features a striking portrait of Rita by artist Hazel Morgan.

“Hazel brilliantly captured Rita’s inner light and indomitable spirit,” remarked Nancy Moore, chair of the Arts and Our Faith Committee. A plaque will also be installed honoring the leadership of Barbara Corning and Doris Logan, two faithful members of the Women’s Association.

A fitting tribute to Rita’s diligence and convivial spirit, the Rita Arlen Room will host deacon gatherings, board meetings, and fellowship events for years to come.
