This year our popular series CREDO: Essentials of Christian Theology focuses on four female mystics whose lives span the 12th to the 19th centuries. Today Executive Pastor Charlene Han Powell and Tim Palmer Curl, director of communications, are our guides to the profound insights of the Spanish mystic Teresa of Ávila.

Like Hildegard von Bingen, Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada was born an aristocrat but chose a monastic life. A Carmelite nun, religious reformer, author, and theologian of the contemplative life, she was a contemporary (and confessor) of another prominent Spanish mystic, St. John of the Cross. Her book The Interior Castle (1577) is regarded as a masterpiece of Christian spiritual literature.

The complete CREDO series is listed on the right.
